The Situation

Büchi Labortechnik AG intends to expand its product range and expertise in the field of laboratory sample analysis to include freeze-drying. To this end, continuous freeze-drying systems are to be developed.

 

The challenge

For the successful implementation of the new system, we had to take the following criteria into account, among others:

500 W power at an evaporation temperature of -105 °C

Filling quantity < 100 g

Very compact design

Performance even at high ambient temperatures

Switchable evaporator

Flammable refrigerant is used in the low-temperature stage of the L-300. The biggest challenge was to keep the filling quantity below 100 g so that the devices would be approved for air transport. Other challenges included oil management, ensuring a safe shutdown pressure, trouble-free start-up behavior, and efficient control of the refrigeration system.

The Result

The heart of the L-300 is undoubtedly its two-stage cascade refrigeration system with a cooling capacity equivalent to 12 kg of ice in 24 hours at an evaporation temperature of -105°C. With these performance characteristics, Büchi Laboratory Equipment is more than on a par with its competitors in this product segment. As a special feature, the two built-in evaporators – ice condensers – can be operated sequentially or in parallel. This function enables the customer to perform continuous freeze drying.

The L-300 is equipped with an air and water condenser as standard, ensuring easy installation and commissioning. The water cooler relieves the air condenser at high ambient temperatures, thus enabling efficient operation and maximum performance of the refrigeration system.
