Cryo – Coldtherapy with natural refrigerants

ThermodynamX supports the conversion of
cryotherapy device families to natural refrigerants – for
future-proof compliance and efficient, quiet cooling in everyday practice.

“By switching to natural refrigerants, we ensure performance, efficiency and availability – with reduced
regulatory risk over the life cycle.”

— ThermodynamX Projectteam

Background

Existing cryogenic systems were based on synthetic refrigerants.

The market environment demands sustainable alternatives with lower regulatory risk.

High demands are placed on performance, noise, and size in the medical technology sector.

Project Goals

– Near-drop-in conversion to natural refrigerants (e.g., R290) without compromising clinical performance.

– Reduction of noise and vibration emissions through optimized installation and airflow.

– Increased efficiency through a capacity-controlled refrigeration system and optimized airflow.

The challenge

In cryotherapy, constant cold air temperatures, short response times, and low noise levels must be achieved simultaneously.
The switch to natural refrigerants should be accomplished without compromising user comfort, safety, or ease of maintenance.

The solution

ThermodynamX designed a natural refrigerant refrigeration circuit with
variable-capacity compression, acoustically decoupled assembly, and adapted
heat exchanger design. The concept addresses charging/filling volumes, leakage prevention, ignition source distances, and
service-friendly integration – including a measurement and test setup for verification/validation.

The result

The new design enables stable cooling performance with reduced energy consumption and
lower noise levels. The use of natural refrigerants reduces regulatory risk
over the product lifecycle – a benefit for operators, service providers, and end users.
